Services in Chapel

A morning service is held at 11.30 am on all Sundays during law term time (32 Sundays per year), which the public are very welcome to attend.  This is usually a service of Choral Matins sung by the Inn’s professional choir. Services are also held to mark many of the important dates in the Christian Calendar. The two annual carol services are always a highlight of the Chapel’s calendar and are very well attended. Other unique services include the annual Warburton Lecture which is held on a Sunday in June, the Family Day in early July and the Wigs & Mitres service in November (Click here for a transcript of the sermon preached by the Right Revd Tim Stevens, formerly Bishop of Leicester, on 27 November 2016).

On 31 January 2016, the John Donne Sermon was given by The Revd Canon Mark Oakley, Canon Chancellor, St Paul's Cathedral. Click here for transcript.

On 26 June 2016, the Warburton Lecture was given by The Revd Dr Sam Wells, Vicar of St-Martin-in-the-Fields and visiting Professor of Christian Ethics, King's College, London. Click here for a transcript.

During term times, there are usually Bible Readings on most Wednesdays  at 1.05 pm for half an hour. Everybody is welcome. The Bible Readings take place in the Chapel. The date of the first Bible Reading in Hilary term is Ash Wednesday, 1 March.

Highlights in Hilary term 2017 include:

  • 23 March at 5.30 pm: Festal Evensong - and supper
  • 2 April at 11.30 am: A Service to commemorate John Donne
  • 9 April at 11.30 am:  Sung Eucharist, Distribution of Palms and Gospel of the Passion.

The Chapel is also used for weddings for members of the Inn and Memorial Services for senior members (benchers).  Baptisms can take place in the Chapel by arrangement with the Preacher.  These are normally held after Morning Service on Sundays.  The Chapel stands at the heart of the Inn’s yearly calendar with services to mark many of the important occasions in the life of the Inn.

A list of all events held in Chapel can be found in the Chapel Calendar.

Details of Sunday services, including music, for the Easter and Trinity term 2017 will be available soon in the Orders of Services booklet.
