Stone Buildings
By the end of the 18th century, the Inn required additional accommodation and launched an architectural competition for the north-eastern section of the estate. The competition was won by Sir Robert Taylor, a leading neo-classical architect whose work included sections of the Bank of England. Taylor’s design was for a building twice the length of what you see but the Inn lacked the funds to complete the project.
Residents of Stone Buildings have included William Pitt the Younger (1759-1806), the youngest ever prime minister at the age of 24. His chambers (at no. 4) can be seen, marked by a stone sundial on the garden front of the building featuring his initials and the date 1794.
10 Stone Buildings accommodates the Inns of Court & City Yeomanry, a reserves Army Unit and successor to the Inns of Court Regiment.
