HHJ Carmel Wall
Carmel Wall was born in Auckland, New Zealand and came to the UK as an undergraduate. She was called to the Bar in 1986 and after completing pupillage, practised at 4 Fountain Court, a Common Law set of chambers in Birmingham.
After a career break, Carmel undertook judicial work, initially as a Tribunal Judge in the Social Entitlement Chamber and War Pensions and Armed Forces Compensation Chamber. In 2015 she was appointed to the Circuit Bench where she sits in the civil and criminal jurisdictions in Birmingham. In 2019 she was authorised pursuant to section 9(1) of the Senior Courts Act 1981 to sit in the King’s Bench Division of the High Court. She retains her interest in tribunals, also sitting as a Restricted Patients Panel Judge in the Mental Health Tribunal.
Since 2024 Carmel has been one of the Judicial College Course Directors for civil training.
My career at the Bar and then Bench was inspired by a university visit from Lincoln’s Inn Benchers. I was then only able to embark on my career thanks to the tenacity of a Bencher in finding a way for me, as a foreign student, to satisfy the Bar entry requirements. I am very proud, now, to have been elected as a Bencher myself.

His practice focusses on high-value commercial litigation and arbitration, particularly in cases concerned with banking and finance, shareholder disputes, civil fraud and insolvency. He was Chair of the Chancery Bar Association between 2022 and 2024.
It has been a privilege to spend virtually my entire working life based in Lincoln’s Inn. I am delighted to have been elected a Bencher and I hope that I can play a part in extending the many benefits I have received to others.

Called to the Bar by Lincoln’s Inn in 2000, she has extensive experience in Public Law children matters, including allegations of sexual abuse and non-accidental injury in all levels of Court, representing all parties. Becoming a member of Lincoln’s Inn as a student many years ago was truly inspirational. I am now honoured to have been elected as a Bencher and am looking forward to contributing further to the life of the Inn and to working with the next generation of students as they progress to the Bar.

The Inn’s staff and members have been a supportive and influential presence throughout my career. Volunteering for the Inn has been a vital part of what makes being a barrister so much more than a job to me.
