A new educational programme has been made for the first time in collaboration with barristers to tackle career stereotypes and improve children’s listening and speaking skills.

Created by the Bar Council in collaboration with the Inns of Court, teachers, and barristers, the free Speak for Success resources are designed for 7–11-year-olds to build essential oracy skills and confidence while learning about a career at the Bar. The activities include real-life stories from barristers across different practice areas and backgrounds to inspire young people and raise awareness of legal careers.

The Department for Education has found that 1 in 5 children are not at the expected level for communication and language by the end of their first year at school. Research also shows that children form stereotypes about future careers from as young as 5 years old, making programmes like this particularly important.

Teachers can download the free Speak for Success resources, complete with delivery notes, to use in the classroom. Find out more: http://www.barcouncil.org.uk/speak-for-success
