Black Books Society – Lord Grimthorpe Lecture

The event has ended.
Date
Time
17:45 - 20:00
Location
Lincoln's Inn, Ashworth Centre

We are delighted to welcome Richard Wallington (a Bencher of the Inn) to discuss the life and varied career of Edmund Beckett Denison, Lord Grimthorpe, Victorian eccentric, polymath and controversialist in ecclesiastical and other matters. Grimthorpe was a man of memorable achievements – lawyer, amateur architect, horologist and vigorous contributor to the correspondence columns of the Times. As an architect, he is most famous (or notorious) for his restoration of St Alban’s Cathedral where the verb “to grimthorpe” was coined to describe unsympathetic restoration of buildings. At the Inn he restored and extended the Chapel and had drastic (and partially realised) schemes for rebuilding most of Old Square and Old Buildings. As a horologist he devised many improvements to clock design. Most famously he designed the clock mechanism and bell for Big Ben, incorporating his improved design of escapement, which is also used in the Inn’s Great Hall clock.
