The Inns of Court Alliance for Women (ICAW): Applying for Silk
Join the Inns of Court Alliance for Women (ICAW) and King’s Counsel Appointments (KCA) for a panel discussion looking at the process of applying for silk.
The discussion will focus on issues which face many women applicants in particular and be followed by a reception and networking opportunity. This event is open to all who are thinking of applying for silk and would like to hear from the KCA, ask questions and hear more about the process. Questions will be taken on the night and are welcome in advance, please send any advance questions to [email protected]
The Chair of the panel will be Amanda Pinto KC, Three Raymond Buildings and Chair of the Bar in 2020. She will be joined by:

- Sonia Nolten KC, 2 Temple Gardens, London (civil/commercial Bar) – 2023 silk
- Eleanor Temple KC, Kings Chambers, Leeds (chancery/insolvency Bar) – 2024 silk
Themes and topics that will be discussed during the evening include:
- Myth-busting regarding applying for silk – for example competencies and evidence needed, the number and level of judicial assessors and the balance of oral vs written advocacy
- When should you start planning for an application?
- Practical issues including; how best to prepare? what experience to seek?
- Whether consultant input is needed/helpful?
- What systems can chambers put in place to support those considering making an application
- Personal experiences from the panel of deciding to make an application, the application process and life having been appointed a KC
- Supporting silk pathways for Black barristers (see Race Equality Toolkit December 2024)
