The Money Question: Navigating financial wellbeing at the Bar

Date
Time
18:00 - 21:00
Location
Ashworth Centre, Lincoln's Inn and Online

Join the Inns of Court Alliance for Women (ICAW) for this panel discussion on financial wellbeing followed by a drinks reception.

A career at the Bar can be rich and rewarding, both in financial and non-financial terms, but it comes with unique challenges that are under-discussed.

Women especially will earn less day-to-day than their male counterparts due to the gender pay gap, an unfair allocation of work, overrepresentation in publicly funded work and will encounter lower lifetime earnings due to the ever-present gender pay gap. These issues and more benefit from open discussion and sharing of experience.

This panel talk will be chaired by Leigh-Ann Mulcahy KC, the panel brings together the Financial Times’ Consumer Editor, Claer Barrett, and legal professionals from across the judiciary and the Bar, representing the diversity of practice at the Bar, the various stages of career progression and the financial decisions that come along with it.

The panel discussion will include:

  • Consideration of macro financial issues for women throughout their working life including: financial decisions around marriage/civil partnership, divorce, childbirth, career transition (changing chambers, taking silk, going to judiciary, etc.).
  • Micro financial life hacks like budgeting and cash management across different practice areas (experiences from the family, criminal, civil and commercial Bar)
  • What saving for retirement, career breaks, etc. means with lower lifetime earnings.

These topics affect all who practice at the Bar, therefore all are warmly encouraged to attend, regardless of gender.

The Inns of Court Alliance for Women exists to encourage and support women throughout their careers, and to increase retention and diversity within the profession. The ICAW recognises the challenges and barriers to career progression and wellbeing faced by women in the law, and the intersectional disadvantage faced by women of colour and by women with disabilities. Male allies are warmly welcomed and encouraged to support and participate in initiatives organised by the ICAW.
