Educational Charities
The Educational Awards Fund (Charity number 1102415) and the Denning Fund (Charity number 1102414) help ensure that talented students and pupil barristers of Lincoln’s Inn can access the profession, regardless of financial background.
Together, these two charities:
- Contribute around 4% of their capital value each year toward the Inn’s scholarship programme
- Make awards based on merit and genuine financial need
- Support our members during the most financially challenging years: GDL, Bar Course, and pupillage
Scholarship payments are administered and monitored by the Inn, ensuring all funding is used responsibly and directly benefits scholars.
Although the route to the Bar is challenging, the Lincoln’s Inn scholarship fund and the associated support and guidance is both comprehensive and genuine.

How the Funds Are Administered
The Denning Fund and the Educational Awards Fund rely on the Inn’s internal committees to oversee how scholarship money is awarded and used. The Trustees do not manage this process directly.
All scholarship spending is handled by the staff of Lincoln’s Inn and monitored by the Scholarships Committee and the Finance & General Purposes Committee.
When a scholarship payment is approved, the Inn pays the student or pupil directly. The Inn then requests all or part of the agreed contribution from the relevant charity. These contributions never exceed the total value of the scholarships awarded. If there is ever a shortfall, Lincoln’s Inn covers the difference.
