Bar Representation Committee Election 2022 – Call for Nominations
Are you interested in standing for election to the Bar Representation Committee?
The Bar Representation Committee (BRC) plays a prominent representative role within the Inn. The Committee exists to provide representation on behalf of those who have been called by the Inn, who have not been elected Masters of the Bench, also known as members of Hall.
Members of the Committee sit on most of the Inn’s Bench Committees and play an active role in the governance of the Inn; having an input into Inn responses to Bar Council proposals and a say in strategic issues such as the management of the Inn’s property, finances and investment, as well as education, admissions, events for members and scholarships. The Committee currently meet 6 times a year to discuss issues which have arisen and represent the views of members of Hall on matters which affect them at the Inn. You can find out further information about the Bar Representation Committee on our website.
From Wednesday 14 September the Inn will be seeking self-nominations from those who would like to be elected to the Bar Representation Committee for a 4-year term. The nomination and election process will be coordinated independantly by Civica. All members of Hall, who have opted into email correspondence from the Inn, will be contacted separately by Civica on Wednesday 14 September when nominations open. This email will contain the nomination form. You will need to submit this form before the deadline of Wednesday 28 September if you wish to stand for election.
Vacancies
There are 6 vacancies for a 4-year term starting in January 2023. If you would like to stand for election to the Committee you will need to consider which of the four sub-divisions to stand in. They are as follows:
– 1 vacancy for members of 7 years call and under with a current practising certificate in England and Wales (who will automatically be part of both the BRC and the Junior Members sub-Committee).
– 1 vacancy for members with no current practising certificate in England and Wales (encompassing international members and English and Welsh members who do not practice in England and Wales but who are called by the Inn).
– 1 vacancy for members of over 7 years call with a current practising certificate in England and Wales at the employed bar.
– 3 vacancies for members of over 7 years call with a current practising certificate in England and Wales at the self-employed bar.
All members of Hall with a valid email address will be able to vote for candidates in all categories. Please make sure that we have your correct email address in order to ensure that you will receive the self-nomination form and subsequently the invitation to vote. Members who wish to update their contact details with the Inn can do so by filling out this form before Wednesday 28 September. Following this deadline, members of Hall will not be able update their email address with the Inn to vote in the current election but will be able update their email address with the Inn and vote in any future elections.
