New Practising Members’ Mentoring Scheme Launched

This National Mentoring Month, we are proud to announce the launch of our new Mentoring Scheme for practising members of the Inn.

There is a long tradition of mentoring at the Bar, supporting those just starting out in their careers. However, it can also be an excellent way to promote retention and progression for those further along in their journey. Being a mentor to practising barristers also offers many benefits, such as a renewed focus on one’s own professional journey, and the widening of one’s network.

The Member Engagement Team have created this scheme in response to requests from our members for peer-to-peer mentoring opportunities. The Inn’s Practising Members’ Mentoring Scheme will give practising members the opportunity to gain insight and advice from other practising members in a variety of professional areas. These include but are not limited to:

  • Building your practise
  • Applying for judicial posts or for silk
  • Returning to practise after a career break
  • Moving between the self-employed and employed Bar
  • Advice on a protected characteristic

As a mentor, or someone who wishes to be mentored, you can select up to five areas. You can also decide on a timeframe that works for both of you.

The scheme is currently in its pilot phase, and we aim to use feedback from users during this period to make any necessary improvements.

Please visit our Practising Members’ Mentoring Scheme page to find out more and apply, either as mentor or to receive mentoring.

If you have any questions about the scheme, please contact the Member Engagement Team.

Please note, this scheme is exclusively for Called members of the Inn who have completed pupillage and are currently practising at the Bar of England and Wales. Student members currently studying for the Bar Course can visit our Student Mentoring Scheme page to learn more about the support available to them.
