Lecture & Domus Dinner – Law, the Bridle of Power
At this Qualifying Session, students will explore the enduring importance of the rule of law. Henry de Bracton, 800 years ago, urged any sovereign to “temper his power by law, which is the bridle of power… and nothing is more fitting for a sovereign than to live by the laws… and govern according to law.”Has that bridle slipped? Is power loosing itself from the rule of law? What is happening to the rule of law, particularly in the United States? If there is widespread pressure on the rule of law — in the US, the UK, and elsewhere — what could and should lawyers do?
