Bar Representation Committee Election 2023 – Call for Nominations

Wooden cubes on a table. The word 'Election' is spelled out by individual cubes

The Bar Representation Committee (BRC) plays a prominent representative role within the Inn. The Committee exists to provide representation on behalf of those who have been called by the Inn, but have not been elected to the Bench, also known as members of Hall.

Members of the Committee sit on most of the Inn’s Bench Committees and play an active role in the governance of the Inn. They have input on Inn responses to Bar Council proposals and strategic issues: these include the management of the Inn’s property, finances and investment, as well as education, admissions, events for members and scholarships. The BRC currently meet 6 times a year: you can find out further information about the BRC here.

From Wednesday 13 September, the Inn will be seeking self-nominations from those who would like to be elected to the BRC for a 4-year term. The nomination and election process will be coordinated independently by Civica. All members of Hall (who have opted into email correspondence from the Inn) will be contacted separately by Civica on Wednesday 13 September when nominations open. This email will contain the nomination form, which you will need to submit before Wednesday 27 September if you wish to stand for election.

Vacancies

There are 6 vacancies available. Each is a 4-year term, starting in January 2024:

  •  1 vacancy for members of 7 years call and under with a current practising certificate in England and Wales (who will automatically be part of both the BRC and the Junior Members’ sub-Committee).
  • 1 vacancy for members with no current practising certificate in England and Wales (encompassing international members and English and Welsh members who do not practice in England and Wales but who are called by the Inn).
  • 1 vacancy for members of over 7 years call with a current practising certificate in England and Wales at the employed bar.
  • 3 vacancies for members of over 7 years call with a current practising certificate in England and Wales at the self-employed bar.

All members of Hall with a valid email address will be able to vote for candidates in all categories. Please make sure that we have your correct email address in order to ensure that you will receive the self-nomination form and the invitation to vote.  If you wish to update your contact details, you will need to fill out this form before Wednesday 27 September. Following this deadline, members of Hall will not be able update their email address with the Inn to vote in the 2023 election, but will still be able update their email address with the Inn and vote in any future elections.
