European Law Group

Lincoln’s Inn’s European Group run a European Law Programme aimed at offering judges, barristers, and students opportunities to learn more about the practice of European and Human Rights Law.

The Programme consists of various lectures and visits to the European and international courts. The Inn also offers scholarships to undertake placements at European and international institutions, and publishes collections of the lectures held at the Inn.

Events and Visits

European Visits

Three highly subsidised visits to the European and international courts each year for groups of students and pupils, together with senior members of the Inn. The Inn visits the European Court of Human Rights and Council of Europe in Strasbourg, the International Courts at The Hague, and the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. Sir Thomas More Lecture and Dinner

Senior members of the European and UK judiciary offer their thoughts on contemporary topics. On Wednesday 25 October 2023, Judge Angelika Nußberger gave a lecture titled ‘Human Rights – Universalism in Retreat?’. The 2022 Sir Thomas More Lecture was delivered by The Rt Hon The Lord Mance, titled “The Protection of Rights – this way, that way, forwards, backwards…”, which explored the UK’s relationship with the European Convention on Human Rights.

European Lectures

Lincoln’s Inn also holds some standalone lectures each year which covers current issues. Previous topics include tax, competition law, and Brexit. See our What’s On section for upcoming events.

Publications

Lincoln’s Inn’s European Group periodically publishes the Sir Thomas More and other European Law lectures given at the Inn.

Scholarships

Lincoln’s Inn offers a range of scholarships, awards to courts in The Hague, Strasbourg and Luxembourg, and a contribution to applicants who arrange their own placements abroad, as well as contributing towards the Pegasus Trust which is administered by Inner Temple.
