Education & Training

The Inn facilitates a number of different training events for those who have been called to the Bar, some of which are compulsory for all practising members.

During their pupillage year, pupils must complete an Advocacy Course. Pupils cannot start their second six of pupillage until they have passed the Pupils’ Advocacy Course. Practice Management courses are no longer compulsory.

New Practitioners must complete the New Practitioners’ Programme (NPP) within their first three full years of practice. This includes completing forty-five hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), which must include at least nine hours of advocacy training and three hours of ethics. The advocacy and ethics training is provided by the Inns and Circuits.

Once you have practised for more than three full years, you must comply with the rules within the Established Practitioners Programme (EPP) and will need to manage your own CPD requirements. More information on CPD can be found on the Bar Standards Board’s website. The Inn offers advanced training to its Established Practitioners, including vulnerable witness training and its European Law programme.

Get Involved

All of the Inn’s courses are taught by experienced barristers and judges who volunteer their time to assist with the Inn’s education programmes.
